Science/Astronomy/Environmental Club
Advisor: Heather Botelle - Tirrell
The purpose of the Environmental Club is to raise student awareness about local ecosystems. The club will meet once a week during which time club members will learn about local forest, marine and aquatic environments via explorations of these environments as well as guest speakers. A variety of club activities will be offered including, but not limited to: local nature walks and hikes, kayaking, boating and/or canoeing along aquatic and estuarine areas in order to observe species that cannot be seen by land and visits to local nature preserves, land trusts, state parks and nature centers. At the end of the school year some club members may choose to compete in the Envirothon, a competition testing their knowledge of soils, forestry, wildlife, aquatics and environmental issues. The club will also plan one annual (long distance) trip to another environment to learn about the issues affecting that area.
The purpose of the Science and Astronomy Club is to give students the opportunity to explore the wonders of the universe first hand. Students make use of the school's 14" telescope to explore the solar system as well as deep sky objects. The schools planetarium and lab facilities are used to explore everything from atoms to z-particles. Field trips are taken to New York and Boston Science facilities. |
