
Twenty-four students competed in the 28th Annual Lillian S. Young Spelling Bee at 7 p.m., November 24, on the Millicent Disco Hallan stage of the Slater Auditorium. English teacher and chairperson for the event was Debra Kendall: Moderator was English teacher Bryan Burdick; and judges were Barbara Dombrowski, NFA Corporator; Kate Dexter, Literacy Coach, Norwich Public Schools; and Nancy Barry, retired NFA English teacher.
Competing spellers: juniors Evan Callahan, Persephone Marien, Joseph Mitchell, and Sorna Sarker; lowers Peggy Chen, Jennifer Chick, Kaila Galinat, David Lyon, David Michaud, and Hannah Perkins; uppers Daniel Brophy, Joy Chen, Wonhee Choi, Victoria Dearborn, Kaitlin Murphy, Shaon Shakil, Katrina Walczyk, and Shannon Williamson; and seniors Dina Erie, Rashedul Haydar, Patrick Long, Kayleigh Marler, Shalyn Moran, and Lindsay Shelto.
Winners and their winning words were as follows: junior Persephone Marien (asphalt); lower David Lyon (superintendent); upper Joy Chen (frolicking); and senior Shalyn Moran (boudoir).
Seniors Rashedul Haydar and Shayln Moran have competed each of their fours years at the Academy.
