Physical Education Grading Policy
To Receive A Grade: Students must participate in 70% of class meetings to receive a passing grade. Failure to meet the 70% requirement will result in a failing grade.
How Your Grade is Calculated: Each class is worth 5 points. To earn all 5 points in a given day the student must demonstrate the following. Deviation from criteria will lower the points earned during class.
1 Class Preparation - Fully changed into proper uniform (gym shorts, gym shirt, sneakers and socks.)
2 Effort - Participates for the entire class. Gives 100% effort during the class.
Performs to ability, uses skills taught.
Warms-up with class.
3 Sportsmanship/Attitude - Has a positive attitude.
Respects students and teachers.
Leads by example.
Follows class rules.
4 Safety - Respects equipment and works safely. Controls behavior and does not interfere with others.
***Writing Assignment - A writing assignment will be given during the second quarter and the fourth quarter. All students are required to complete the writing assignment on the day it is assigned. A class period will be set aside to read a health or fitness related article and answer a given question in a one-page paper. Writing assignments are corrected using the CAPT rubric. Failure to turn in a writing assignment will lower the final grade by a full letter grade.
Making Up Absences - Any student missing class due to an excused absence is allowed to make up the class. During study hall, the student should report to the locker room and change into his/her uniform. The student must then tell their PE teacher that they are present to make up a missed class. The student will then participate in class. If a student cannot come during study hall, he/she can arrange to stay after school to make up class. After school make up times are from 2:30 to 3:00 p.m. The student must wear a PE uniform and must arrange after school make-ups with their teacher.
Modified Physical Education - If a student is ill or injured on the day of class, he/she can still receive credit for the day. The student must change into their gym uniform, go to the nurse, and bring a modified slip to the physical education teacher. Depending on the illness, the student will be given a modified activity to do, or they will be assigned a written activity to complete during class.
Any injury or illness, requiring more than a few days out of physical education class will require a signed note from a physician. From the day the injury is reported to the physical education teacher, the student has two weeks to see a doctor with a Norwich Free Academy Medical Excuse Form (available in the nurse's office.) The doctor must check off all activities the student can participate in. If there are no safe activities, the student will be removed from the physical education class and be required to take it during their senior year.
