Norwich Free Academy is one of two high schools in this entire nation with its own museum, the social studies department works hard to incorporate this priceless resource into our curriculum. Instilling an appreciation for the culture, art and history of this museum and all it has to offer is a top goal of our department.
The Slater Memorial Museum offers many opportunities to come into contact with various cultures through its works of art from around the world. A major goal for the social studies department is to teach students how to find a universal commonality throughout the world’s cultures and history, while simultaneously appreciating uniqueness. The museum offers visual exploration of the same values by allowing students to examine, analyze and compare works of art from multiple cultures and time periods. Essentially students are provided the opportunity to travel through five continents and many more cultures without ever leaving our campus.
To learn more about Slater Memorial Museum, its history and what collections are available please refer to the above tab titled Museum. The permanent collections are viewable at that location.
Beyond group tours of the museum, classes can bring their students to the museum for lectures, slide presentations and curriculum specific creative activities. This webpage will provide one with lesson ideas and existing lesson handouts created by NFA faculty and the Slater Museum staff.
Please feel free to explore the tabs on the left for various information and lesson plans to build stronger connections with the Museum.
