GENERAL ART CLASSES Students in the art classes will learn about Art through visual, oral and written assignments. They will have the opportunity to explore a wide variety of materials and techniques in both two and three-dimensional media.
APA001 PRINCIPLES OF ART I: A beginning art course designed to introduce students to drawing, painting, two and three-dimensional design, elements of composition and art appreciation. A variety of media and techniques will be explored. No previous art experience is required. (1/2 credit) Studio Fee: $3.00. Open to J.
APA601 PRINCIPLES OF ART II: A course designed for those students who wish to explore a wide variety of media and techniques. ADR661 INTRODUCTION TO DRAWING: A beginning drawing course that will teach the basic steps and techniques used in drawing from observation. ADR861 ADVANCED DRAWING: Students will continue to develop their observational drawing skills and enhance their knowledge of drawing methods and tools as they work from nature, the figure, still life and their imagination. Skills will be reinforced through problem solving and idea development as students investigate concepts in composition that deal with the organization of two-dimensional surfaces and the creation of volumetric space. Sketchbooks are required for personal exploration and idea development. This course may be taken for UCONN credit. AFS671 DESIGN FOR LIVING : This course provides students with information, in the areas of art and design that affect our lives on a daily basis. It will cover the basics of design, textiles, fashion, and interior design that relate to clothing, the environments in which we live, work & learn, and aesthetic choices that are made involving visual and practical design decisions. ABD671 CREATIVE BOOK DESIGN: This course will teach you how to create a variety of beautiful, useful, handmade books. You will learn how text and images are brought together to create books that are one-of-a-kind works of art. We will touch upon the history of books, from the simplest rolls of paper to hardcover volumes and you will learn the various processes and techniques of bookbinding as you produce structurally sound books, in a variety of formats. AFM671 FIGURE MODELING: This half-year course introduces students to the art of sculpting the human form from life using clay. They will learn some basic anatomy, build armatures, and construct figures with clay on an armature. We will study the casts in the Museum and look at some contemporary ways figure sculpture is used. (1/2 credit) Prerequisite: a full year of drawing or a full year of ceramics. Open to: U, S
APM671 PORTRAIT MODELING: Working from direct observation of a model, students will sculpt the human head out of clay. Students will study the portrait sculpture in the museum as well as contemporary themes of portrait use in the art world. Studio Fee: $10.00 (1/2 credit) Prerequisite: a full year of drawing or a full year of ceramics. Open to: U, S
AWC871 EXPLORATIONS IN PAINTING: This beginning painting course will introduce students to a variety of painting materials and techniques. In order to gain an understanding of painting as a visual language, students will explore the use of tempera, watercolor, acrylics and mixed media. Students will work from observation as well as having the opportunity to develop personal ideas. No previous painting experience is required. (1/2 credit) Studio Fee: 10.00. APC701 TRADITIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY: This course will introduce students to the basic components of composing, developing, and producing a body of work using photographic media. Darkroom techniques are explored. Projects will focus on improving technical and creative skills during the developing process. This full credit course allows an in-depth exploration of a variety of materials and techniques and the time needed to refine skills. (1 credit) Studio Fee: $10.00. APC801 TRADITIONAL/ DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY: This course is designed to introduce the student to both traditional and digital photography. One semester will cover basic black and white photography and darkroom techniques. The second semester will feature the use of digital cameras and the manipulation of photographs in the computer using Adobe PhotoShop. Students will also scan photos and objects to digitize and manipulate them. By the end of the year, students will have a portfolio of both traditional and digital photographic work.(1 credit) Studio Fee: Computer Disks and color prints must be purchased. AGA201 BEGINNING GRAPHIC DESIGN: This course will introduce students to basic design development using computers as well as various traditional art materials. It is designed to prepare the student for the demands of the graphic designer and the skills needed in the field of visual communication. (1/2 credit) Open to J, L, U & S.
AGA651 GRAPHIC DESIGN II: Students will continue to develop skills in basic design principles and color theory. These skills will be applied to various Graphic design projects such as posters, small displays, photographic imaging, use of text in design assignments, and PowerPoint presentations. Students will experience hands on skill development using traditional art materials along with computers using PowerPoint, PhotoShop, PageMaker, and Painter. A portfolio will be developed and presented on CD at the end of the year. (1 credit) Studio fee: $6.00. Prerequisite: BEGINNING GRAPHIC DESIGN AND/OR PRINCIPLES OF ART I OR II. Open to L, U & S.
AGA351 DIGITAL IMAGING: In this course, students will learn the process of producing images that are computer generated and computer enhanced. It is a Fine Arts approach to the use of this media. Students will work in various kinds of computer software such as PhotoShop, Digital Photography, Painter, PageMaker, and Power Point. This will allow them to experience image manipulation, including the integration of text, digital photography, scanning, elaborate PowerPoint presentations, and simple animation. At the end of the year students will digitize their work and present it as an animated, interactive portfolio in Power Point. (This course may be repeated for credit. (1 credit) Studio Fee: $8.00. Prerequisite: BEGINNING GRAPHIC DESIGN, AND/OR GRAPHIC DESIGN II.

ACL661 CLAY: This 1/2 year introductory clay course focuses on the making of both functional and sculptural forms using a variety of hand-building techniques. Surface treatments and glaze applications are also covered. Idea development and craftsmanship are stressed as student's design and build original work while being introduced to three-dimensional design concepts. (1/2 credit) Studio Fee: $10.00. ACY661 CLAY: This full year introductory clay course explores 3-dimensional design concepts in the making of both functional and sculptural forms. Basic hand-building techniques, modeling, surface treatment and glaze application will be covered. Students will design and construct original work with an emphasis on idea development. The full year allows for in-depth exploration of materials and techniques and the time to refine skills. Appropriate research is expected. Second semester students will be introduced to throwing clay on the wheel. (1 credit) Studio Fee: $20.00. Open to F, L, U & S.
ACY761 CLAY II: Students will continue to develoop their skills using clay and enhance their knowledge of materials and techniques. Both sculptural and functional forms will be explored on and off the wheel, with an emphasis on idea development and higher standards of craftsmanship. ACY961 CLAY III: Students will continue to develop their skills using clay and enhance their knowledge of materials and techniques. ADE774 SCULPTURE: This course introduces the students to the manipulation of simple solid materials and familiarizes them with forms and space. A variety of techniques will be covered including carving, casting, constructing, and modeling with emphasis on materials, techniques and tools of the basic sculpture making process. Work in metal, clay, wood, wire, paper, plaster, stone, and found objects will be explored. (1/2 credit) Studio Fee: $3.00. ASA956 ADVANCED PLACEMENT STUDIO ART: This course is open to seniors who wish to complete a portfolio of specific artwork to be evaluated by the College Board for possible college credit, advanced placement or both. The portfolio is a combination of up to 6 actual pieces of art as well as approximately 36 slides of individual works. The portfolio examination is required. The course is intended for students seriously committed to studying visual art. (1 credit) Advanced Placement Examination Fee: $76.00. Open to: Fine Arts students and non Fine arts students with a grade of B or above in DESIGN I, FINE ARTS DRAWING FOUNDATIONS, HONORS FINE ARTS COMPOSITION, ADVANCED DRAWING, or FINE ARTS PAINTING I. AHA866 AP HISTORY OF ART: This course is recommended for all Fine Arts Students. This course is a slide lecture covers the development of architecture, painting and sculpture from the prehistoric period to contemporary times. This class is open to students with an interest in the artistic development of civilization. (1 credit). Open to U & S.

This unique program is designed for those students interested in continuing their post secondary education at a professional art college, a university art department, or a specialized art school. Our program is designed to allow students the opportunity to develop art related skills, investigate a wide variety of materials and techniques and explore conceptual ideas of image making while building a portfolio of work. Interested students must see the Art Director to apply for this program.
ADR664 FINE ARTS DRAWING FOUNDATIONS: This class is required for all Fine Arts Students. It is a rigorous introduction to observational drawing. A variety of media will be used and emphasis will be placed on perspective and structure. Sketchbooks required. ACP875 HONORS FINE ARTS COMPOSITION: This class is required for all Fine Arts Students. This rigorous Fine Arts drawing course is designed to further develop observational drawing skills, enhance knowledge of basic drawing tools and techniques, and explore conceptual ideas of image making. Students will investigate concepts in composition that deal with the organization of two-dimensional surfaces and the creation of volumetric space using a variety of materials and techniques. Sketchbooks are required for personal exploration and idea development. In this beginning painting course, students will learn a problem solving approach to color theory both practical and historical. Students will develop painting skills to describe form and structure through the use of painting materials, color and techniques. Problem solving and the artistic process will be emphasized along with the application of skills concerning the principles of art and composition. Students will be expected to develop ideas and respond to artwork in both written and visual language. . APT975 HONORS FINE ARTS PAINTING II: This class is required for all Fine Arts Students. Students continue to explore color as a means of expressing form and concepts. Most painting will be based on observation with a focus on the figure within a spatial environment. The contributions of painters, past and present, will be studied. Sketchbooks are required for resolving compositions. . HONORS SENIOR FINE ARTS PRINTMAKING: This class is required for all Fine Arts majors. The course will focus on the exploration of various printmaking processes and techniques. Students will refine their drawing skills as they learn the basics of creating multiple images through relief, intaglio, serigraphs, silk-screening on fabric, lithography and contemporary non-toxic printmaking techniques. Aesthetic understanding is developed through studio projects that stimulate the imagination and encourage creative problem solving. Basic papermaking and book making will also be explored. Sketchbooks will be required for idea development and for both visual and verbal responses to artwork. Non Fine Arts students may sign up for this course ONLY if space is available and they have a recommendation from an art instructor.
