FINE ARTS PROGRAM

This unique visual arts program is a long established special interest core of study at the Norwich Free Academy.

The Fine Arts Program is for those students that are contemplating a career in art and are interested in continuing their post secondary education at a professional art college, a university art department, or a specialized art school.

Our program is designed to allow students the opportunity to develop basic art related skills, investigate a wide variety of materials and techniques and to explore conceptual ideas of image making.

FINE ARTS REQUIREMENTS

ACADEMICS:

All academic courses should be taken at the highest level a student can handle. Honors and A.P. courses are highly recommended.
Art schools look at both artwork and grades.
Physical Education will be taken 4 times per week for 1 semester opposite the ½ credit studio courses.

GRADES:

A student must maintain a B average, in their studio courses, to remain in the Fine Arts Program.
A portfolio review will be held for students struggling with the program. Recommendations will be made at that time to determine the best course of action to ensure each student’s success.
A student may be put on “probation” to allow them the necessary time to make the appropriate changes that would bring their grade up to the requirement.

THE PORTFOLIO:

Each Fine Arts student is required to build a portfolio of their work
A portfolio is an important component for acceptance into a competitive art program on the post secondary level
The portfolio is the best evidence of artistic growth and development
The entire art faculty reviews each Fine Arts student’s portfolio annually and feedback is provided to the student.

COST:

Because of the specialized nature of our Fine Arts Program students are responsible for the cost of certain art supplies and nominal studio fees.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

PERMISSION:

Because of its uniqueness, students wishing to enter the Fine Arts Program must have approval of the Arts Director and should meet with her to discuss their goals.
We will work in conjunction with the student’s guidance counselor to provide a schedule that meets each student’s individual needs.
Permission, in writing, must be received from the student’s parent or guardian
