 - Cranston House, home of the Ninth Grade Program
The Ninth Grade Program
Our vision for the ninth grade students is to establish an educational environment in which all students can experience academic and social success. Our dream is that, ultimately, every student will obtain a high school diploma and the knowledge and experience to succeed in post high school endeavors. We have the following goals for the Ninth Grade House:
THE NINTH GRADE HOUSE WILL:
1. Provide a smooth transition into The Academy environment for ninth grade students.
2. Promote pride in academic achievement through an emphasis on high expectations.
3. Help students establish good basic work habits.
4. Promote class and school pride through special activities and opportunities.
5. Encourage communication between parents and teachers.
6. Expeditiously notify parents of student absences and class cuts.
7. Provide opportunities for teachers to discuss and seek help and support for solving student problems.
8. Give faculty members the opportunity to make curriculum and student placement recommendations. This will include making changes to class placement if the unit teachers agree on the need.
9. Encourage teachers to employ a variety of activities, methods and ideas in their classrooms and to share them with other teachers.
10. Provide for a variety of interdisciplinary learning experiences.
Each student is assigned to a unit of four teachers, one each from the English, mathematics, social studies, science departments and a guidance counselor. The teachers in each unit will have a common planning period and regular meetings will be held to assess the progress and needs of students. The four teachers and the assigned guidance counselor will develop strategies, make placement changes, seek specialized help, and communicate with parents/guardians regarding each student.
During the year, students in the Ninth Grade House will have a number of special programs and activities. Committees of teachers will be working on student recognition and student orientation.
We hope to provide our students with individual attention which will allow them to make a smooth transition from the sending school to The Academy and in so doing fulfill our dream of seeing every member of the Junior Class receive the best possible education and graduate from high school.
Ninth grade students are placed according to parental request, demonstrated ability, transcripts, standardized tests, and eighth grade teacher recommendation. In the ninth grade each student must take one credit each of English, mathematics, science, and social studies along with physical education and health. All ninth graders participate in Explore testing. In addition, at least one full credit of elective courses must be chosen from Section A or Section B.
