In 1853, The Reverend Doctor John Gulliver outlined to 10 of the "wealthiest and noblest" members of the community his plan for the establishment of a free academy to provide education for "mechanics, merchants, navigators and agriculturists," and even for young ladies. By 1855, a total of 36 people had made contributions totaling $86,000, an extraordinary initial display of generosity that began a long tradition of private endowment.
The Gulliver Society at The Norwich Free Academy, named after the school's founder, was established in 1997 to recognize those individuals who have made a provision to leave a gift to the Academy in their estate plan. The Norwich Free Academy Foundation staff is available to alumni and friends and their financial advisors to discuss estate and gift planning and the lasting legacy it provides to the donor and to the Academy.
