UNCASVILLE (December 10, 2007) —Norwich Free Academy was selected as the first Connecticut Sun High School Girls’ Basketball Team of the Week of the 2007-08 season on Monday, Dec. 10th.
NFA, which finished 21-3 last season and captured a share of the ECC Large title, is off to a 2-0 start this season. Led by sophomore guard Kastine Evans, the Wildcats captured the Masuk Tip-off Classic with a 62-40 victory over Pomeraug on Dec. 8th following a 54-45 first-round victory over host Masuk on Dec. 6th.
Evans earned tournament Most Valuable Player honors after two commanding performances. The sophomore recorded a double-double in the first game with 13 points and 10 steals against Masuk while also pulling down six rebounds. In the championship game, Evans scored 20 points while grabbing eight steals and dishing out five assists to go along with three rebounds.
In its second season, The Team of the Week is just one in a series of initiatives undertaken by the Connecticut Sun to highlight local girls’ high school basketball, where future WNBA stars are already competing. The Sun also conduct a high school tour, host the CIAC Championship luncheon and recognize the four CIAC Class champions during a ceremony at halftime of a regular season game.
