Campus Safety is an integral part of NFA’s effort to provide a safe environment and a secure physical plant throughout the campus. The Campus Safety Department was first established in 1957 when then Superintendent/Principal George Shattuck hired retired Norwich Police Officer Alfred Patterson. The department now has a director, an assistant director, eight full-time officers, and one part-time offi cer. Campus Safety is comprised of men and women that have a demonstrated commitment to caring for others, service, loyalty to the institution, and personal integrity; they know that tomorrow’s future begins on today’s campus!
The NFA Board of Trustees and Administrative Staff have charged the Campus Safety Department with responsibility for both student safety and campus security. Emphasis is placed upon trying to resolve issues before they become behavioral problems. Every effort is made to identify troubled students and potentially hazardous conditions before the learning environment is disrupted by inappropriate behavior. The staff then works with the administrators and support services to implement a course of action that will resolve any and all campus safety concerns that have been identified. Campus Safety is also involved in a variety of proactive activities. They conduct professional development training for faculty and staff in reference to safety issues, non-violent crisis intervention, sexual harassment, and sensitivity training. The staff also conducts classes for the students covering topics such as disciplinary issues, campus safety concerns, diversity training, sexual harassment, domestic violence, substance abuse, career opportunities, constitutional law, bullying and intimidation. The Campus Safety staff strives to be a deterring presence for those considering inappropriate conduct and an advocate for those victimized by such conduct when it does occur. Their goal is to be a pro-active presence on campus, identifying potential problems before they disrupt the learning enviroment.
