Hello-
On Friday Katie and I traveled together in the morning. We visited a school in the community of Diamante and Katie did health assessments with half of the students there while I made the banner with the other half. The school only had two rooms. They had dirt floors and there were three grades in one room and two in another. Most of the children had head lice, bad teeth and some looked to be suffering from kwashiorkor. After we left the school Katie and I split up again. They left me at another river to conduct tests while Katie visited another school, this one in the community of Aguas Frias. We also were able to see the site where the clinic will be built. After lunch we all went to another river together. There many of the children in the community jumped in the water to help me find critters. Katie commented that it was like an impromptu class conducted in the river. It was wonderful for both of us because we each had a chance to see what the other has been doing in each community. We then returned to the community center where we had another meeting with ASDEK and the community leaders. Once again each leader took turns speaking to us. Every one of them expressed heartfelt thanks for our visit and their hope that this would be a lasting partnership between the two communities, NFA and Kilambe. I was struck with the sincerity of their gratitude and their overwhelming generosity of both house and spirit. It was a wonderful way to end the day. Before the meeting I felt completely fatigued but after I felt refreshed.
