Today Katie and I arrived in Managua. We were picked up at the airport and brought to Selve Negra. Here we took a tour of the farm on horseback. they have vermiculture (worm composting), 200 head of dairy cattle and they make their own butter and cheese, sugar cane, coffee (shade grown and organic), pineapples, mangoes, etc. They also have a pond where they grow algae that is sold to the cosmetic businesses for their products.
The view is lovely as we are at the top of the highest peak in Matagalpa. Much of the drive from the airport to this picturesque setting showed the tremendous poverty that is rampant in this area. In the resort itself the people who work here have their own clinic, schools, homes, etc that are provided by the owners, both of germanic descent.
Tomorrow we head off to Kilambe which is where we will focus on water testing and working in the schools. We are not yet sure about internet access in that area so we will send another message as soon as we are able.
Thanks,
Heather
