Wrapped in Pride: Ghanaian Kente and African American Identity explores both the art and symbolism of kente cloth in Ghana and its expression of identity in African American communities, evoking and celebrating a shared cultural heritage. Curated by Doran H. Ross of the UCLA Fowler Museum of Cultural History, the exhibition uses contemporary examples of kente, objects incorporating its patterns, installations, and photographs to place the cloth in its cultural contexts.
This exhibition has been made possible through NEH on the Road, a special initiative of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
It is brought to you by Mid America Arts Alliance.
This version of Wrapped in Pride: Ghanaian Kente and African American Identity was developed by the UCLA Fowler Museum of Cultural History, Los Angeles, California, based on an earlier exhibition co-organized with the Newark Museum, Newark, New Jersey.

Sleight of Hands: Contemporary Hooked Rugs
June 10 - September 2, 2007
 - Above, Ben Lathrop's "Lincoln Banner" and Linda Rae Coughlin's "Ace of Diamonds", both wool hooked rugs
An exhibition of hooked rugs featuring the work of more than 50 regional artisans from across the Northeast. Also on display is The "Art" of Playing Cards, a unique traveling exhibition that includes "Art Rugs" by international textile artists.
The Slater Memorial Museum has established a recent tradition of hosting summer exhibitions of glorious fiber art. Slight of Hands: Contemporary Hooked Rugs continued that tradition and brings it solidly to a level of excellence proving that materials and the media don't matter...but artistry and craftsmanship do. The show reflects the mountaintop of what is being produced worldwide in this highly accessible art form. It is with great pleasure that the Slater Memorial Museum presents this delightful and beautiful exhibition.
