From Boston/Worcester
90 West to Auburn. 395 South to exit 81
From New York/New Haven
95 North to 395 North to exit 81 East
At the end of the highway (Rt. 2 East), bear right onto Washington Street. Pass Backus Hospital. At the second stoplight bear left. The Norwich Free Academy will be visible on the left. The museum is the building with the tower. The total distance from the highway (Rt. 2) to the museum is about three quarters of a mile.
Visitor Parking: Parking may be limited during the school year. Spaces for museum visitors are available in front of the building.
Tours
General tours of the Slater Museum conducted by a museum docent are available for all age groups, and generally take from 45 to 50 minutes. It is important to schedule a visit at least 4 to 6 weeks in advance. - Collections to visit include the Slater's renowned plaster cast collection which reproduces Egyptian, Near Eastern, Greek, Roman and Italian Renaissance sculpture found today in England, France, Germany, Italy, and elsewhere;
- American paintings and sculpture, furniture and furnishings dating from the 18th through the 20th centuries, and European art and decorative arts from the 15th through 20th centuries;
- African and Oceanic sculpture and artifacts, primarily 19th and early 20th century, from the Paul Zimmerman Collection;
- Japanese, Chinese and Korean art and artifacts, 17th through the 19th centuries, from the Emily Noyes Vanderpoel Collection of Asian Art;
- Pre-Columbian and Native North, Central and South American art and artifacts dating from before Columbus' arrival in the New World through the 20th century;
- Maritime artifacts relevant to the early history of Norwich and this region, and a large firearms collection with guns primarily made in and around Norwich in the 19th century.
